Let's talk about the dogs people cross the street to avoid. The bullies. The Staffies. The German Shepherds. The Heelers. The Rottweilers, the Dobermans, the "are you sure that's safe?" breeds. These dogs get labeled before anyone even learns their name ā and that's something I'll never be okay with. Some of my deepest, most rewarding experiences as a pet parent have come from exactly these dogs. The ones who need a little more patience, a little more trust-building, and a caretaker who isn't scared off by a bad reputation. My heeler, Ruby Red, was reactive. She had anxiety that required real, consistent work ā and she also had one of the biggest hearts I've ever known. Losing her to kidney disease was one of the hardest things I've been through. She shaped the way I approach every dog in my care. My Staffy mix, Blue, is reactive too. Every year we navigate allergy flare-ups, behavior management, and a whole lot of love. He has taught me that reactivity isn't a character flaw ā it's a communication style that needs to be understood, not punished. So when you bring me a breed that other sitters have turned away? I see it as a privilege. I work with all breeds ā the misunderstood, the intense, the high-drive, and the ones who just need someone willing to meet them where they are. No judgment. No fear. Just care. Your dog deserves that. šāš¦ŗ
